10 Ways to Avoid Living With Regret

10 Ways to Avoid Living With Regret 10 Ways to Avoid Living With Regret We often assume that other peoples successes have been easily achieved. They must be incredibly smart or lucky to do such great things, right? In reality, success is frequently the product of failure. Sheer determination to keep pushing past fears and failures is often the quickest road to success. One of the best examples I can give you is the story of the one and only Colonel Sanders, who bounced from job to job before eventuallyselling his first restaurant at age 65.Dont be embarrassed by failure - embrace it. If youre not failing at something, youre not stretching yourself. Spanx founder Sara Blakelys dad used to ask herregularly, What did you fail at this week? The result was that failure didnt become a taboo for Blakely - it was something to be celebrated. That certainly had something to do with her eventual success in life.If you dont take chances, youll never find out what youre capable of. Looking for a new job? Want to get an advanced degree or certification? Do it.Need mora encouragement? Here are 10 tips to help you get out of your own way and live a regret-free life1. Recognize the Impact of InactionWere often afraid to make decisions because they feel permanent and we want to avoid making a mistake. However, not taking action is its own decision - one that very often turns out to be a mistake anyway.2. BeClear About What You WantYou dont have to have it all figured out, but some clear direction is key. Know yourself and plan for what youd like to achieve. Create a vision motherboard or meditation practice to help you focus on obtaining your goals.3. Ask Yourself WhatYoure Really Afraid OfIf you know what you really want but youre not going after it, you need to find out whats getting in your way. Worrying that you dont have enough time or the right connections is, more often than not, just an excuse based in fear.In fact, just about any reason keeping you from going after what you want is likely based in fear. So ask yourself What am I afraid of? Are you afraid of what others might think? Afraid of your own ability? Whatever the issue, define it, acknowledge it, and work toward overcoming it.As Mark Twainwrote, Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear. 4.Focus on the FutureOne way to overcome your fears is to focus on the future. Fears are rooted in the present, so throw yourself into the future. What has your future self accomplished? What does your future self hope youll do today? It may sound hokey, but give it a try. Taking yourself out of the present can be very gratifying, and it can give you a clear vision to work toward.5. MakeMore Time for Loved OnesSpend more time at home while you have young kids. Make more of an effort to visit your aging parents. Youll get just as much out of it as they will. I dont think Ive ever heard anyone say they regretted spending more time with loved ones, regardless of the impact it may have had on other areas of their life.6. Recognize the Value of TimeTime is our greatest and most precious asset. Unfortunately, its all too easy to overlook how valuable time is until we realize we didnt use it wisely.Remind yourself daily that whatever time you have is a gift. Spend it in ways that enrich your life and propel you forward.7. TakeCare of YourselfPersonal and work demandscan easily take over your entire life. Suddenly, you realize you cant remember the last time you exercised or ate a healthy meal. Taking care of your body helps you do everything else better. It takes commitment, but you are worth the effort.8. Let Go of Existing RegretsIt may sound obvious, but you may unknowingly be harboring regret for things that happened, or didnt happen, long ago.Once this regret gets internalized, it can hold you back from pursuing your goals - which only leads to more regret.Let go of old resentments and anger. Make amends where you can,but sometimes you may have to acce pt that a situation will have no resolution. Be willing to let that go, too.9. Consider the Difference Between Failing and Not TryingIn the present, we often fear failure. In the future, the only thingwe regret is not having tried. Coming to terms with that fact that you never put yourself out there ismore painful than knowing you went for it and it just didnt work.10. DoThings for OthersIt hasbeen said that giving to others pays dividends back to the giver. Get involved in a cause youre passionate about. You might experience so much goodness as a result that your only regret will be you werent able to give more. With a little help and sttze, you can do whatever you put your mind to. Ask for help when you need it. Share your goals with your friends and support them on their journeys, too. Youll have nothing to regret if you do.A version of this article originally appeared on theAtrium Staffing blog.Michele Mavi isAtrium Staffings resident career expert.

How to Conduct a Job Search When you Leave Your Job on a Bad

How to Conduct a Job Search When you Leave Your Job on a BadHow to Conduct a Job Search When you Leave Your Job on a BadHow doyou manage an interview question about your past employer when you left on avery bad note? And how do you daregive references knowing your boss would slam you in a minute? Here are my responses to two clientswho asked this very question just last week.In thefirst case, the current job seeker welches in the Private Equity field and this is trulythe smallest of small worlds. This employee did take some responsibility for the badrelationship. He slacked off a biton his job responsibilities because he was accepted into business school, knewhe was leaving, and was happy to finally be rid of a tough and unreasonableboss. But the manager came afterhim with a vengeance. Instead ofjust laying him off, he wrote ascathing note to HR and vowed to never employ him again. It wasnt the first such letter thismanager wrote, which leads you to believe he didnt have the best rela tionshipbuilding skills. In thesecond case, the current job seeker was instructed by their manager to dosomething that was against the law and when they objected, they were told toeither comply or be fired. Theychose to be fired. Not an easychoice to make with two toddlers at home. Here ismy advice to these two job seekers, and anyone else out there with a similarsituationNEVER sayanything negative about your employer or your experiences at the firm. Never even hint at a bad relationshipbecause interviewers are listening for even the slightest bit of negativity inan answer or expression. Its animmediate red flag thrown up against the candidate. If an interviewer asks you about your past managers style, speak about it in a positive manner. There had to be something positive about the person when you firststarted working with them use what you can and make it authentic because bodylanguage is a powerful thing when people know how to read it and more andmore are becoming adept at that If youthink the person you are speaking to knows your past manager, or will call themdirectly, put that thought out of your head. Worrying about things that are out of your control will nothelp you in your job search.Concentrate on what you can control how well you network and interview, quantifying youranswers, following-up properly, continuing to network.References line up the people that can speakpositively on behalf of your past work experiences. This list could include past managers and co-workers, andeven those that reported to you.If you are out of school just recently, professors, placement staff anddeans can be used. If your manager is openly hostiletowards you, many times in business, we have matrix managers people we report to in addition to ourdirect managers. I would securesuch a reference if at all possible. If youare asked directly why you are no longer there, and you are not currently ingraduate school, I suggest that you be honest. If someone wanted you to do somethi ng against the law, andyou left because you would not do such a thing, the smart thing is to walkaway. If they are an upstandingcompany, they will be impressed by your integrity. If they dont appreciate such honesty and integrity, youdont want to work there anyway. If you prospectiveemployer asks for your past managers name, I would use a matrix manager if atall possible. Matrix managers canusually vouch for your work ethic and quality of work. References are checked, so proceed withcaution. One lastthing to remember. There is noguarantee that your last manager and your prospective employer wont know eachother and because of this you will not get the job. That is out of your control. But what is in your control is the number of jobs you applyfor, the skill with which you network, and your resiliency and fortitude withthe job search process. Besmart, really smart, about how you conduct your job search. Cast a wide net regarding companies, and industries if need be. Ensureyour job search skills are top notch practice, practice, practice, because no one is born a good interviewer. Make your own luck here and as Winston Churchill once saidnever, never, never give up

Is your spouse or bestie sabotaging you A relationship coach weighs in

Is your spouse or bestie sabotaging you A relationship coach weighs inIs your spouse or bestie sabotaging you A relationship coach weighs inDid you ever have the sneaking feeling that your best friend at work has their own agenda which doesnt necessarily include your success as a priority? Youre not alone and theres a very good reason for it.Life partners and best friends are naturally competitive with each other and its better just to recognize that its natural perhaps a repeat of sibling rivals than to see it as just rolleal, according toPolly Young-Eisendrath, Ph.D., a relationship expert and author. The feeling of measuring yourself and your achievements against someone elses, especially someone who is close at hand and with whom you have to share and negotiate, is natural.Maybe, but what happens when those feelings have you wondering if you still trust that person with your work challenges or questions?Dont second-guess your feelingsIf you feel that nagging feeling that someth ing is wrong, its probably because youre right. We too often feel confused, ashamed, or sheepish about acknowledging our competitive feelings that are experienced as envy, jealousy, or self-pity, Young-Eisendrath said. But being competitive is what usually leads some of us to greatness. Then again, if you cant acknowledge those feelings, you might cover up some of the other feelings that drive you.The worst of these, and the one that can lead to sabotaging success or accomplishment is envy. Envy leads to putting down or diminishing something that one cannot get for oneself. Its the sour grapes approach of resentment of someone elses success, money, attractiveness, leadership, creativity. So, lets back up here for a moment. Are you envious of your partner or coworker? Do you feel like theyre jealous of everything youre accomplishing? If they dont admit their feelings, they might twist it and instead put you down.Or, as Young-Eisendrath explains it, if you dont feel you can match up to s omeone, you will tend to want to put them down. She offers these examples - Oh, you didnt really need that Whats the point of getting that degree? Going on that vacation? I wouldnt want that - to give you an idea of some of the insidious ways people can put you down intentionally or otherwise. The envy is realWhen envy pokes its nose into a close relationship, Young-Eisendrath believes that friends may need to use the skills of something she developed called Real Dialogue to sort things out. This means speaking for yourself (taking responsibility for your own impressions, feelings, opinions and not saying YOU made me feel this way), paraphrasing (stepping back, taking a breath and finding out if you truly understand the other persons impressions, feelings, opinions instead of just rehearsing your own), and remaining open and curious about what is going on with the two of your as separate people,Young-Eisendrath says. And whether its your work wife or life wife, always remember You wi ll always be separate people. You will always be achieving things in a different reservierung and in different ways you will rarely, if ever, have exactly the same good fortune at the same time, Young-Eisendrath elaborates. And each and every time might be different You will need to sort out carefully each of your own experiences at times of eithers success especially sudden success.Dont allow bad feelings to festerIf the competitive themes in your relationship are not sorted out, allowing each person to feel accepted and witnessed, even in the midst of jealousy and pride or self-pity, then the competition and rivalry can get the better of your love and loyalty, cautions Young-Eisendrath.And getting into a cycle of jealousy or hostility might not only ruin your friendship but your career potential as well.Ultimately, the more hostile and hateful aspects of envy will undermine the competence and good luck that either of you can bring to newfound accomplishments, she adds.If that happ ens, youll both run the risk of damaging your ability to create future success together or apart. Because lets face it, its hard to get over betrayal, much less from someone who is supposed to boost you up in life not drag you down.It might sound a bit oversimplified, but Young-Eisendrath advises Dont let that happen. Instead, allow that both of you to have and accept competitive feelings with each other and work through them, with respect, to support your love.

Australias Freelance Revolution (And How To Join It!)

Australias Freelance Revolution (And How To Join It) Australias Freelance Revolution (And How To Join It)Posted March 16, 2015, by Marni WilliamsWith the jobless rate climbing and the workforce mora casualised than a backpackers CV, we could be forgiven for thinking that job security was a thing of the past. But what if I told you that a growing number of us dont actually care? Sure, we all want to have successful careers, and there are those painfully regular things called bills, but it seems that more and more of us are taking matters of employment into ur own hands. If you havent heard, theres a freelancing revolution on, and its the biggest thing since all those factories started popping up in the 1760s.Australias in, get amongst itStudies have shown that a third of Americans were freelancing as early as 2005, and the United Kingdom saw 12.5 per cent growthin freelancing between 2008 and 2011 alone. With such strong growth overseas, its probably no surprise that the trend is well and truly taking hold here in Australia. The Freelancing in Australia study, published late last year by Edelman Berland on behalf of online freelance portal Elance-Odesk, makes it clear they estimate that a third of Australians are already finding ways to become their own boss.Whether were talking about the rise of portfolio careers, the gig economy or independent workers the meaning is the same its about unshackling ourselves from the confines of a job, and building a career piece-by-piece. But surely this kind of widespread change is just out of necessity, right? With the GFC still looming large in our rear vision, it is easy to assume that when permanent jobs dried up we simply adapted but theres much more to the story. Its global, and trackableCommunications technologies have given independent workers the ability to engage with employers anywhere in the world at all times of the day, opening up a global freelance market that didnt exist before. And on the hiring side of thing s, employers are increasingly finding that online project management platforms allow them to track their freelancers progress, while user-friendly job boards help them to measure their value. Freelancers today come with LinkedIn recommendations, star ratings, online portfolios and a lot more competition than they used to.Its a generational thingIn the past we were all pressured to jump straight into a life-long career at the ripe old age of 18, work our way gradually through office politics and fit within the restrictions of our chosen business. It was as if job satisfaction lived at the end of a long, straight line. These days its much more acceptable to meander our way through a few courses, units, and especially jobs before working out where our talents lie. The ability to continue to pick and choose jobs, develop a specialty or expand skills as and when we like, is very appealing to todays workers, and especially to Gen Y.This appeal might even be reflected in Australias employme nt figures. The Guardians Greg Jerichorecently looked below the surface of the Australian Bureau of Statistics job stats to find out just who is being casualised. It turns out that while part-time work has been growing over the years, the overall proportion of casual labour has remained steady for all demographics except one the under-30s. Of course, the difficulty of getting freshly-qualified youth into work in Australias transitional economy may have something to do with it, but what if casual work is also what the next generation wants?I dont want to downplay our youth unemployment figures, but it seems negligent to ignore a shift in attitudes many young workers today are focused on curating their careers and trying out their skills. Its more than a case of playing the field before settling down young professionals dont just plan to be lawyers, theyre lawyer-PR managers who publish music and dabble in an online retail start-up in their spare time.In fact, 58 per cent of those sur veyed in Australia said freelancing was choice over necessity. This suggests there are significant lifestyle factors at play here. Who could blame us for taking a new approach? Research conducted in the United States even found that 90 per cent of freelancers surveyed were happier now than they were before going solo, with nearly half feeling no impact from the economic downturn. The other large group of freelancers in Australia is the Baby Boomers who, once they know how to market themselves, can be well remunerated for difficult-to-find skills and unique levels of experience.Lets not forget supply and demandA revolution cant be one-sided, and this kind of a shake-up certainly wouldnt be possible if companies werent also changing their attitudes towards hiring on a project-by-project basis. And thats certainly borne out in the figures Australian odd-job board Airtasker saw the number of tasks posted on their site double in just the first quarter of last year, and Elance-oDesk says i t has grown 235 per cent over the past three years. These days you can hire anyone online a graphic designer, handyman, IT specialist, home and office cleaner, web developer, SEO expert, videographer, marketer the list is endless. This explosion of access to OK, sometimes overly cheap labour has also pushed Australians to work at the opposite end of the spectrum. A higher end of the freelance market looks to be emerging, with smaller cooperative outfits like The Copy Collectiveand freelance hubs such as Rachels Listvetting their freelancers andtailoring their services to specific clients and markets. Rachels List conducts its own annual survey and the majority of hourly rates were within the bracket of $25 to $150 an hour. While the global nature of online job boards has brought the price of some jobs down, there has also been a perception change occurring locally, where employers now recognise that freelancers can offer difficult-to-find skills something that has been increasingl y important to businesses who want to stay ahead of the game in todays often disrupted environment. This ability to pay for specific expertise on a short-term basis when needed, coupled with the fact that business can now find, manage and track their freelancers better, has transformed freelancing in Australia into a $51 billion economy.Thinking of joining the revolution?Keen to get a piece of that $51 billion? Dreaming of flexible hours and working from home? While I may have convinced you that the freelance revolution is real, as a freelancer myself I feel I need to offer you some advice dont jump the barricade just yet. What, you didnt think I was going to tell you it was all sipping lattes in a cafe and working a three-hour day, did you? Top Ten Practices to Improve your Job Response

Top Ten Practices to Improve your Job ResponseTop Ten Practices to Improve your Job ResponseTop Ten Practices to Improve your Job Response Recruiting Training CornerIn todays competitive recruiting market, your company needs access to quality resumes to recruit the right talent for the right job at the right time.Yet todays complex world allowsjob seekers to access information about your company from a wide variety of sources, such as your career site, job boards and social media platforms. The result can mean mora applies but elend necessarily from the right candidates. It also makes it difficult to track the sources that are driving the best return on your recruiting investment. The good news is that these challenges are relatively simple to overcome. The best practices below will help you attract the right candidates, reduce drop-off through the apply process and enable you to authenticate the most effective recruiting sources.1.Implement auto-source tagging. You can reduce the chan ces of collecting questionable candidate source data by adding an auto-source tag to the end of your job posting URL. Studies have shown that when provided with a list of job sources, only one out of six seekers will correctly self-identify the correct source. This inaccuracy of your source reporting can negatively impact your bottom line.Speak with your ATS provider about implementing auto-source tagging to eliminate the need for seekers to self-identify. Accurate sourcing of job response data is critical to improving candidate flow, enabling you to invest in the right sources to find the talent you need.2.Optimize your job title. Improve your job response by making koranvers job seekers can find your jobs. Seekers tend to use very simple and common search strings and keywords. Use specific and common titles with two or three descriptive keywords. You dont have to be an expert to optimize your job title. Do your research using free keyword research tools on the Web like the Google AdWords Keyword Planner.3.Create a compelling and engaging job description. Now that theyve viewed your job, help seekers understand WHY they want to work for you.Seekers have more choices today. Unemployment is inching down and more jobs are being created. Differentiate why your company and your position are BETTER than the next job in their search results.4.Include a call to action. Dont expect seekers to apply based on your job description alone create a sense of urgency. Use language that motivates the seeker to apply.5.Redirect seekers directly to the requisition in your ATS. Nothing is more frustrating than clicking on the apply button, only to have to start your search all over again. Reduce candidate drop-off by redirecting candidates directly to the requisition as opposed to your main career or job search page. Eliminate extra steps.6.Dont make seekers create a log-in before they can apply. Yes, you likely want the seekers email address early in the process, but once you h ave it, what do you do with it?Unless you are actively communicating with these seekers through a CRM, move the creation of a log-in to the end of the apply process. Make it easy for seekers to check on the status of their application enable them to create job agents for future opportunities.7.Evaluate your apply process. How many clicks does it take to complete your apply process from start to finish? How many questions must the applicant answer? If your process is long and cumbersome, the drop-off percentage will increase, including candidates who are the most qualified.Good talent is likely already employed, so if you make it difficult to apply, they will likely not complete the process.8.Eliminate barriers offer alternatives to apply. As you evaluate your apply flow, review the information that you are asking seekers to supply. Are you aware of the type of information you can legally ask candidates to provide? Beyond using a legal hiring process, many job seekers unwilling to sh are information early on in the process and will instead opt out. If information-gathering is a requirement for your job, be sure to explain why and give seekers the option to learn more. Some seekers want to learn more about a company before they apply. Or they may not meet your current job requirements. Dont lose out on these potential candidates. Provide them the opportunity to create a saved search or engage with you through a talent community, on your Facebook page or Twitter feed. Cultivating a talent pipeline should be part of your ongoing recruitment strategy.9.Make sure your career site is mobile friendly. According to Pew Internet, 56% of American adults have a smartphone. A recent Glassdoor survey indicates 68% of job seekers use their mobile device to search for jobs once a week or more.Job seekers expect mobile optimization and are likely to leave your site if its cumbersome and time-consuming to load content. Invest in technology that will take your recruiting efforts t o the next level and make it easier for seekers to engage with you, regardless of how they find you.10.Compare yourself against your competitors. Be aware of what your competitors are doing to recruit talent. Look at their career site, job listings, Facebook and Twitter pages and go through their apply process. From a seekers perspective, is it better or worse than yours? If you think of seekers as consumers of work, be sure your employee value proposition is clear, concise, and compelling. Make it easy for seekers to engage with you. While technology has created efficiencies in the hiring process, it also encourages high candidate drop-off and often provides imprecise source data. Be proactive in prioritizing and implementing these best practices.

Theres been a hold on the position.A candidate never sees what goes on in the background. Its typically not as simple as deciding, We need another person to help this team. Lets hire someone. DoneThere is a league of processes that go into opening and posting a job. Companies are usually given a headcount they cant exceed. Usually, theyre given restrictions on overhead costs.Sometimes a job is open and being sourced for, but then management decides to restru cture, reprioritize, or reallocate resources. This can altogether eliminate a job you were vying for, or perhaps put a hold on it.2. The team needs more time.On a less technical side, things couldve gotten really busy for the team you were hoping to join and they simply need to hold off on filling the role until things slow back down. The implication of hiring someone is that theyll need the time and flexibility to onboard and train the new hire. If theyre busy, they might collectively decide to press pause. While its not common some have waited months before being hired3. Youre swimming in a very competitive pool.A good problem for a recruiter to have is having too many great candidates While the hiring manager might be enthused by the prospects, this can also make a final decision harder for the team.Sometimes theyre split between two candidates and cant seem to tip the scales convincingly enough. If they dont feel the pressure to immediately backfill a position, they could be taking their time to really review and re-review the candidates resume, portfolio, and interview notes.4. The hiring manager just cant get enough.Every now and then, a candidate will fare well in their interview process and pass with flying colors. But for whatever reason, some hiring managers dont always want to immediately pull the trigger. They tell the recruiter something like, We liked him/her, but lets try to get a few more. While this can be frustrating for both the candidate and the recruiter, it can help the team affirm their initial impressions of you and they may come back with an offer.Unfortunately, it could also mean that they do find someone else they determine to be a better fit.Good news travels relatively fasterWhile good news generally travels faster in the hiring process, this isnt always the case. Its important to consider that a fast response time will mean different things for different companies and recruiters. Some companies might consistently get offers out within a few days while others will typically take one to two weeks to provide feedback after an interview. For a candidate dangling in suspense, one day alone could feel like an eternity, but it shouldnt be a cause for despair. If its been a week or two, theres nothing wrong with sending a follow-up email requesting an update. If youre not hearing back, it doesnt always mean its because its bad news, and an update could help ease some of that anxiety. It can seem like the end of the world, but just remind yourself that its notThere are other opportunities out there for you that will take you where youre truly meant to be This is good news The journey to shaping your career is one requiring patience and effort. Be resilient and move on to the next oppor tunity.Always respond gracefully, because a no today can be a yes later. How to Groom Like a Successful Businesswoman

How to Groom Like a Successful geschftliches miteinanderwomanHow to Groom Like a Successful BusinesswomanDressing for success includes a lot mora than just choosing the right outfit. To complete your professional look, you must also consider accessories and personal grooming. How you present yourself to others can make or break a job interview, or even cost (or help foster) you a promotion at work. Dressing for Success and Employer Dress Codes Your appearance is your employers appearance. That is, how you present yourself at work is a direct reflection of your employer as well.If the environment is conservative, regardless of your flair for style, you may need to adapt your look to fit into a conservative corporate environment. You should always dress to impress clients, investors, and customers because a winning sales pitch is not enough to seal the deal. A womans professional appearance needs to support her professional accomplishments and not show off the wrong assets. One of th e simplest, yet best bits of advice regarding dressing for the workplace is probably the fruchtwein obvious know the dress codeof your employer If your business attire is distracting others (you want them to look you in the eye, not the chest bursting out of a too-tight shirt or daring neckline) because it is too sexy, drab, or colorful, your business contacts may focus on how you look, not on your business skills. Perfumes, Scents, and Odors in the Workplace Do not let the first impression you make about yourself be your personal scent preferences Avoid wearing perfume and heavily-scented products in all business settings. You might like them, but they have no place in a business environment. Scents can trigger asthma, overpower a room, and are often more offensive than pleasing to others. You probably already know that many business places are smoke-free, but some are also now going scent free.If you are not sure, ask your human resources representative if there are any unique requirements about the workplace dress code. And speaking of smoke-free environments, never smell like smoke (if you smoke in a car, your clothing will always pick up the odor) when going for a job interview.A strong smell may distract the person interviewing you from focusing on your skills if all they can think about is how you smell. How to Present Professional Looking Fingernails and Hands Women often use their hands to talk with, so they become a focal point. It is important to have hands and fingernails looking professional. You dont want them to look like you are heading out for a wild night on the town. Nails should be clean and trimmed or sculpted. Avoid wearing unusual or shocking nail colors. Nail art and nail jewels are not acceptable for business meetings. Hairstyling Tips for Business Women Style should be neat and conservative, and preferably off the face. With few exceptions, hair color should not be shocking or unusual (leave blue hair for Halloween). Hair s prays and gels that have a strong scent or odor should be avoided. Business Makeup Advice Keep it simple and appropriate for daytime. Wearing no makeup at all is almost as bad as wearing too much makeup. Appropriate Jewelry for Business Women Jewelry should not be noisy (no metal bangle bracelets), too large, or costume jewelry that is gaudy. Keep earrings small, simple, and above the earlobe. It is better to wear no jewelry at allthan to wear too much jewelry, but all business women should at least wear a nice, conservative wristwatch. Closing Thoughts Demonstrating that you care about your appearance communicates to the person you are meeting with that they are important to you. Paying attention to the details of your appearance sends a message to others that you will also pay close attention to business details, and the needs of your customers and clients.
